Guide To Shining Sea Bikeway

The Shining Sea Bikeway: A Woods Hole-to-North Falmouth Cycling Guide

The Shining Sea Bikeway is one of the most enjoyed attractions of a Woods Hole visit — a 10.7-mile paved path that runs right along the water, practically past our front door, and straight into some of the most beautiful scenery Cape Cod has to offer. Whether you’re an avid cyclist or someone who hasn’t been on a bike since summer camp, here’s everything you need to know to make the most of it.

What Is the Shining Sea Bikeway?

The Shining Sea Bikeway is a paved, mostly flat rail-trail that stretches 10.7 miles from Woods Hole to North Falmouth, following the old railroad bed that once carried trains from Boston straight to the Woods Hole docks. It’s named for the “shining sea” line in “America the Beautiful,” written by Falmouth native Katharine Lee Bates, and once you’ve ridden the Woods Hole end of the trail, with Vineyard Sound glittering beside you, the name makes perfect sense.

The trail passes through four distinct Falmouth villages including Woods Hole, Falmouth Village, West Falmouth, and North Falmouth, and along the way you’ll ride past salt marshes, cranberry bogs, wooded conservation land, glacial ponds, and roughly two uninterrupted miles of coastline that many locals consider the most scenic stretch of pavement on the entire Cape. It’s flat, well-maintained, and suitable for riders of essentially any age or ability, which is part of why it’s such a popular way to spend a morning or afternoon here. It’s also worth noting that many people enjoy walking, running, rollerblading, and dog walking on the bike path as well.

Starting Right From Woods Hole

Here’s the part we especially love: the trail’s southern end is essentially at the Woods Hole Steamship Authority ferry terminal, just a short walk from Sands of Time. That means you can step out our front door, walk your bike (or a rental) a few minutes down to the trailhead, and be pedaling along the water within minutes, with no driving, no searching for trail parking, no logistics to sort out.

This southern stretch, running from Woods Hole up through Surf Drive and Trunk River,  where Oyster Pond meets Vineyard Sound, is widely considered the most spectacular section of the whole bikeway. You’ll ride with open water views for nearly two miles before the trail turns inland toward Falmouth Village. It’s an easy, flat ride, which makes it a great option even if you’re traveling with kids or aren’t looking for a workout; it’s just a beautiful way to see the coastline at your own pace.

Trail Access Points Along the Way

While starting in Woods Hole is the most convenient option for our guests, the bikeway has several access points if you want to join or exit partway through:

  • Woods Hole (Railroad Avenue / Steamship Authority area): The southern terminus, and the closest access point to Sands of Time.
  • Locust Street, Falmouth: A central spot near Falmouth Village, with parking available across from Mill Road.
  • Depot Avenue, Falmouth: Just off Main Street downtown, with a small parking area and easy access to shops and restaurants if you want to break up your ride.
  • Old Dock Road, West Falmouth: An unpaved lot near the trail’s midpoint, close to Chapoquoit Beach.
  • County Road, North Falmouth: The trail’s northern terminus, with a larger parking lot for those starting from that end.

If you’re staying with us and riding round-trip from Woods Hole, you don’t need to worry about any of this, but it’s useful to know in case you want to plan a shorter ride, or arrange a shuttle back after a one-way trip. You can also access the Steamship Authority Palmer Avenue parking lot shuttle (with bike racks), which regularly travels between Woods Hole and Palmer Avenue.

Where to Rent a Bike

Not traveling with your own bike? No problem, there are several well-regarded rental shops in the area, and a couple of options that make things especially easy for Sands of Time guests:

  • RideAway Adventures operates a rental drop-off of Bikes right to our hotel, about as convenient as it gets if you want to grab a bike and go (they also offer Kayak rentals to local beaches). Just give them a call, and your rentals will be waiting for you to explore Falmouth on wheels.
  • Corner Cycle, in downtown Falmouth, offers daily and weekly rentals of standard and performance bikes, along with trailers and helmets.
  • Holiday Cycles, in Falmouth Heights near the Island Queen dock and the Black Dog Heights Cafe, is a longtime local favorite known for friendly service and a solid fleet, including tandem bikes and four-wheel surrey bikes.
  • Art’s Bike Shop, in North Falmouth near the trail’s northern end, is a great option if you’re starting your ride from that side, with helmets, locks, and maps included.
  • Bike Zone, also in North Falmouth, offers an especially wide selection, including e-bikes, plus delivery service if you’d rather have a bike brought to you.

Most shops include helmets and locks with your rental, and several offer maps highlighting the best stops along the way, worth asking for when you pick up your bike.

Tips for Combining a Ride With Your Sands of Time Stay

A few things that make the ride even better when you’re staying with us:

Start early, or start late. The trail is beautiful any time of day, but riding the Woods Hole waterfront stretch in the early morning or in the golden light of early evening is especially memorable, and you’ll have more of the path to yourself.

Pack a beach stop into your ride. Old Silver Beach and Chapoquoit Beach are both just off the trail near West Falmouth, making it easy to turn a bike ride into a beach day. Bring a towel and your suit, and you can lock up your bike right at the trailhead.

Break up the ride in Falmouth Village. The Depot Avenue access point puts you right near downtown Falmouth’s shops and restaurants, a great spot to stop for lunch or ice cream before heading back.

You don’t need the whole 10.7 miles. Riding out-and-back from Woods Hole to Trunk River and Surf Drive, about a 4-mile round trip, captures the most scenic waterfront stretch of the entire bikeway, making it a perfect option if you’re short on time or riding with young kids.

Ask us for a map. We’re happy to point you toward the nearest rental shop, mark up a trail map, and suggest a route based on how much time you have and what kind of ride you’re after.

A Ride Worth Building Your Trip Around

The Shining Sea Bikeway isn’t just a nice add-on to a Woods Hole visit; for a lot of our guests, it ends up being one of the highlights. It’s rare to find a trail this scenic that starts essentially at your hotel’s doorstep, and even rarer to find one this accessible to riders of every level. Whether you ride for twenty minutes or spend the whole afternoon making your way up to North Falmouth and back, it’s one of the best ways to see this part of the Cape.

Staying with us puts you closer to the trailhead than almost anywhere else in the area, so the next time you’re planning a visit, consider building a ride into your stay. We’re happy to help you plan the route and make the most of our convenient, beautiful location. Pro tip: once you’ve completed the Shining Sea Bikeway, plan a day trip over to Martha’s Vineyard to explore the Island on two wheels too!
