Things for Parents to Do During Kids Summer Programs

Things for Parents to Do During Kids Summer Programs

Sweet summertime is such a magical season (especially on the Cape). With summer camps and programs in full swing, your kids are undoubtedly going to have one of the best summers to date.

What about your summer fun? Surely, your kids shouldn’t be the only ones having a ball during these incredible summer months.

With everyone’s fun accounted for, let us show you the way to some summer fun for parents on Cape Cod:

While the Kids Are Having Their Summer Fun, Parents Are Having the Best Time with These Must-Do’s and See’s:

Whether you live on the Cape or are a first-time/seasonal visitor, these summer activities will have you soaking up the sun, trying (or tasting) something new, and allowing you to truly make some memories with your loved one or a group of friends:

Got All Day? (Or a few days?) Here’s What You Should Do:

Go on a Cape Cod Sailing Excursion
Departing from Falmouth Harbor, you can catch a sail boat ride from one of Cape Cod’s finest vessels. While each excursion is dependent on the wind and tide that day, the boat tries to head west to see the Nobska Lighthouse and other homes and landmarks that can only be seen from the water. The sail will usually also deliver views of the Elizabeth Islands and much more.

Let us not forget to mention that there is a cash bar on board that is always open.

Take the Ferry to Martha’s Vineyard
After a short 45-minute ferry ride from Woods Hole, you can set foot on Martha’s Vineyard and get to exploring all that this incredible island has to offer.

With brightly painted gingerbread cottages and unique harbor towns, lighthouses, pristine beaches and beautiful farmland, there is so much to do and fall in love with.

Perhaps best of all, depending on your schedule, there are a multitude of ferry arrival and departure times every day, so you can get back the Cape when you need to.

Visit Nantucket
If you have a few days and want to island hop, catch another ferry from Martha’s Vineyard to Nantucket Island.

While on the island, be sure to reserve a little time to visit the Nantucket Whaling Museum (along with the island’s many other historical spots), browse the many shops and boutiques, and – of course – eat at a few of the island’s delectable seafood restaurants.

Go Crabbing
With millions of blue crabs in the waters off Cape Cod, there are certain spots where you can catch them on your own with the right gear and live like a local.

During this experience, you’ll love spending quality time in the water and soaking in the beautiful scenery around you.

Go on a Guided Kayaking Tour
If you have the time to see the Cape from a whole new perspective – like in the waters from a kayak – you shouldn’t pass up the opportunity.

With guided tours, solo rentals, group outings, and kayak lessons, you can find a kayak option for you or your group – like riding ocean surf, navigating rivers, or exploring secluded creeks.

Kayaking is the best way to see parts of the Cape that no one can see from land.

Only Have a Few Hours? That’s Still Plenty of Time to Get Out and Explore:

Rent Some Bikes and Ride the Shining Sea Bikeway
If you’re looking for a cardio activity that delivers true scenic beauty, consider renting some bikes (or bringing your own) and biking the 10.7-mile paved route.

The bikeway travels from Woods Hole to North Falmouth and back, and with the majority of the bikeway hugging the shoreline, winding along the Vineyard Sound coast and providing views of Buzzards Bay, this is one bike route you must experience.

It’s important to note that the Shining Sea Bikeway isn’t just for cyclists of any level, you can run, walk or skate on the path, too.

Check Out the Knob
A true hidden gem on the lower part of the Cape, the Cornelia Carey Sanctuary (The Knob) is located in the small, historic Village of Quissett – close to Woods Hole.

If your goal is to unwind on a secreted beach, you should grab your beach towel, a good book and head to the Knob.

From the small parking area, you’ll follow a walking trail that’s just about a mile long. When you reach the end, you’ll be within a nature area that overlooks Buzzards Bay and has beaches where you can swim, bird- and boat-watch, and simply relax.

Spend Some Time Together at the Nobska Lighthouse
As one of the Cape’s most beloved landmarks, Nobska is a picturesque lighthouse with a rich history.

Sitting between Buzzards Bay and the Vineyard Sound, and overlooking Martha’s Vineyard and Nonamesset Island, the Nobska Lighthouse can be visited any time of the day but is most breathtaking during sunrise and sunset.

Enjoy a Remarkable Meal
While summer on the Cape is known for its incredible beaches and vintage lighthouses, it’s also an unbelievable place to find authentic, fresh, and exceptionally delicious dishes.

Whatever your cuisine type, the Cape is sure to impress – especially with seafood, of course. Who wouldn’t love a lobster, fish, some oysters or a crab that was caught a mere three hours before ordering?
