Admire the Woods Hole Drawbridge: A Sight to Behold

The Woods Hole Drawbridge or the Eel Pond Bridge, allows boats to transit from Great Harbor, Woods Hole to Eel Pond, Woods Hole. The movement of the bridge is a fixture in the daily operation of the village and a constant reminder of the seafaring nature of our community.

Highlights:

  • The bridge had to be rebuilt during the winter of 2008-2009, and opened to traffic in May 2009.
  • The bridge operates as a single-span bascule bridge. There is a counterweight under the street, outside the bridge tenders house. The counterweight balances the weight of the road surface which makes it easier to lift the bridge. It is similar to a seesaw in a playground where it is easy to tilt the seesaw when both sides are balanced. It’s pretty fascinating to see!

Tips:

  • The bridge operates year-round. It opens on the hour and half hour after a boater requests an opening.
  • Be sure you don’t get stuck on the other side if you have limited time and are trying to catch a ferry!
