1. The Knob Falmouth, MA
The Knob – which is actually located in Woods Hole – delivers incredible trails for easy walking and exceptional views for birding.
Overlooking the beautiful Quissett Harbor and Buzzards Bay, the Knob is maintained by Salt Pond Area Bird Sanctuaries and is accessible year-round.
Bird watchers have reported seeing the following birds from the Knob: Goldeneye, Red-Breasted Merganser, Osprey and many more.
2. Wood Neck Beach Falmouth, MA
This scenic, sandy beach is located at the mouth of Little Sippewisset Marsh, making it an ideal site for spotting a variety of birds that are attracted to the marsh’s fish and insect populations.
Bird watchers have reported seeing the following birds at Woods Neck Beach: Shorebirds – such as Shearwaters, Gulls and Sandpipers – Loons, Common Eider, and Songbirds – such as Catbirds or Goldfinch.
Some bird watchers have even seen hundreds of European Starlings here forming the clouds known as “murmurations.”
3. Frances A. Crane Wildlife Management Area Falmouth, MA
This sought-after wildlife management area is a meadowland habitat with long sightlines that make for accessible and fun bird watching. Bird watchers have reported that this area makes it possible to see feeding birds that would otherwise be hidden by trees and vegetation elsewhere.
Bird watchers have reported seeing the following birds at the Frances A. Crane Wildlife Management Area: Dipping Swallows, chirping bats and many others. Late afternoon or early evening (before sunset) is a recommended time to visit this area.
4. Salt Pond Acres Wildlife Area Falmouth, MA
Located just off the Shining Sea Bikeway, Salt Pond Acres has wonderful nature trails and is adored by many bird watchers. As a bird sanctuary, the loop trail offers many different spots to see incredible wildlife and various bird species.
Bird watchers have reported seeing the following birds at the Salt Pond Acres Wildlife Area: Swans, Ospreys, and many others.
5. Beebe Woods Loop Falmouth, MA
Beebe Woods is a 400-acre swath of protected forest that offers miles of trails that loop through the rocky hills and sandy woods. It is a peaceful place to walk and bird watch any time of year.
Bird watchers have reported seeing the following birds at Beebe Woods: Cardinals, Nuthatchs, Black-Throated Green Warblers, Wrens, Downy Woodpeckers, Blue-Jays, Robins, Goldfinches, Cedar Waxwings, American Crows and Chickadees.
6. Peterson Farm Border Trails Falmouth, MA
Much more than a great place to explore nature and see birds, Peterson Farm Border Trails is a place where farmers have raised sheep for nearly 300 years.
Peterson Farm is home to miles of trails that run through fields and forests. Visitors also get a chance to explore the working sheep farm.
